And France is not to be outdone: it is regaining certain momentum with no less than 325,000 foreign students welcomed in 2016.
BEST COUNTRIES TO STUDY ABROAD: FRANCE AT THE TOP OF THE RANKINGS
France appears in several rankings, starting with the 2nd edition of the “Study.eu” ranking, listing the best European countries in terms of studies in 2018. France, which gained one place compared to the last year, is in third place (68.6%), behind Germany (80.7%) and the United Kingdom (75.8%). The results of the study were established according to 3 main criteria, namely:
- the quality of education, 45%;
- the cost of student living, 30%;
- life and career prospects, 25%.
France is doing well in the “Education” category, being recognized for the quality of its teaching, the performance of its universities in international rankings such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings or the Shanghai ranking of World Universities, or the number of courses taught in English. Campus France also published an annual report presenting some key figures on students’ international mobility, placing France, in 2017, in the 4th place worldwide among host countries for foreign students after the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. France, the leading non-English-speaking country for hosting international students, benefited in particular from certain events, such as the Brexit and the migration decree of Donald Trump.
STUDYING ABROAD IS MORE RELEVANT THAN EVER
In five years, the number of foreign students in France has increased by 12.2%, a growth that is not slowing down. As proof, the number of foreign students increased by 4.6% year-on-year, the highest annual increase in 5 years. It must be said that France has many assets that are sure to seduce, starting with the wide range of training courses specially designed for Anglophones (1,200), as well as the possibility of benefiting from government funding, even for foreign students.
France also demonstrates a stimulating dynamism, with 31 French companies among the 500 world leaders, and shows a clear trend towards innovation and entrepreneurship. It is therefore no surprise that 9 out of 10 international students declare themselves satisfied with their stay and do not hesitate to strongly recommend France. Moreover, Paris has been elected as the favorite city of international students.
In detail, 45% of foreign students are from Africa, 19% from the European Union, 16% from Asia-Oceania, 9% from America and 4% from the Middle East. The ranking of the top 6 nationalities for the year 2015-2016 is as follows:

- China (28,043);
- Algeria (22,660);
- Tunisia (12,077);
- Italy (11,188);

With an environment undergoing many changes, particularly in terms of demographic trends, growth and economic crises, higher education is undergoing profound changes. UNESCO expects more than 9 million students to be internationally mobile in 2025.
